Thank G-D for actors

Actors save lives. You think I'm kidding. Yes, doctors and nurses save lives, ebola fighters save lives, firefighters, police, social workers- all save lives too. But I want to take a moment and ask you actors, do you know how important you are? Do you know how many people you affect on a daily basis and how many lives you make better?

Most people go through their days feeling as little as possible. We are a society that works to make money, that equates connection with a text msg and that gazes into our phones rather than the eyes of the one we love. We act aloof because getting overly excited is uncool. We avoid feeling disappointed by never really getting our hopes up. About anything. Hard times must be approached practically because if you stopped to think about how you feel nothing would get done. When you're taking care of someone with a terminal illness or an elderly parent or dealing with difficult financial times or just dealing with everyday life, you can't sit and cry about it. Life isn't fair, my mother was right. You just have to keep going.

So... we go to the movies.

People go to the movies to cry. Or they stay home and watch Netflix and cry. Or they feel scared, or thrilled or passionate or like everything is possible! Watching someone else truly go through something and seeing our own humanity onscreen or onstage is sometimes the only true emotional connection we have a chance to experience. That is pretty damn important. So thank goodness for actors. Thank you for giving every bit of yourself so that we can feel something through you. It can be a truly lonely road being the kind of actor that lets himself/herself be truly seen, without judgment. You must be willing to experience your own pain, your own depth and your own mortality. But it is truly a gift of life for those who can go to the movies and feel along with you. So be brave actors. Be willing to be seen in all your flaws and all your loneliness, all your anger and your true joy. You are saving lives.

Why you should be in a Meisner Class

When it comes to classes, many of you have no idea what to take. I mean everyone knows you should take an on-camera class and maybe an audition technique class and probably something that teaches you how to analyze and break down a script. Ok, what then? Shouldn't you be booking jobs like crazy after all that? In some cases, yes. But for most of us, those technical acting skills are merely the beginning. Great acting comes from being able to have personal moments on a very public platform. That means doing extremely private things in front of the world. It is possibly the simplest premise yet the most difficult thing for us to do. So here are 4 things you will get from a Meisner Technique class that will take your acting to the next level.

Picture
1. Break down those walls and get vulnerable
The most common thing I see from actors is that they don't want to appear weak or give in to feelings that make them vulnerable. As an actor, your strength is in your vulnerability. In Meisner class  you practice expressing your truth even if it makes you look bad. When you risk looking bad, you end up looking great! We cry with our favorite actors when they get their hearts broken and we root for them to find happiness in the end. You must really go through the pain in order for your audience to feel something- THAT is what great acting is made of. You need a safe place to take down those walls and do dangerous things.

2. You will become a master of human behavior
You will gain an intimate knowledge of your own instrument, you'll find out where things really live in you and in turn you will learn to really see people and understand their feelings on an instinctual level. Why is this important? Actors must understand people and understand themselves, not from an intellectual place but from an emotional place. This can only be done by consistently working of others behaviors and watching how people react to things. All the while, allowing emotions to go on inside of you and come out in true and full behavior. That is what will make you compelling to watch.

3. Learn to work moment to moment and finally get out of your head
You learn never to take anyone for granted and never think you know what will happen- people are surprising! At the end of the day, regardless of the scene, the most important thing is the chemistry between the actors. We care about the relationship more than what you are saying to each other. You will learn how to get your focus completely off yourself- even when you are feeling a ton of emotion. When you build that muscle of getting your attention off yourself, it will keep you focused in a scene no matter how many takes you have to do, no matter how tired you are and no matter how emotional you get.

4. You will learn to create chemistry and rapport with anyone
By actively listening to somebody and reacting from their voice and behaviors it will connect you on a level far beyond the social realm. Its about forgetting politeness and learning to live in the uncomfortable, that is what we want to see. That is what you'll learn in class.

What's so good about Midnight Meisner?

Well, that time is upon us again! Midnight Meisner: Spring Training Edition happens tonight. We start at 9:30 pm with drinks and snacks and socializing. Then at around 10:30 we launch into an all night Meisner Technique acting class that will get you out of your head and teach you to play moment to moment. So here are 5 reasons why you should join us tonight!
Picture
1. Experience the JOY
The Meisner technique is a fascinating and exciting way to enhance your acting. Midnight Meisner is really a great way to experience a class at the studio in a more social and casual environment. A perfect experience for those new to the technique or nervous about jumping right in to a regular class!

2. Instincts come out at night
Something strange and wonderful happens to participants after midnight. People are more willing to take risks and you never know what will happen. It can get rowdy. That is a selling point.

Picture
3. Snacks and drinks
There will be wine, non-alcoholic beverages and snacks! Plus a super exciting acting class that could change your life. All for 10 bucks? In Toronto? Now that's value!

4. You'll see the world differently on Thursday
Past participants of Midnight Meisner have reportedly had major changes in the way they listen to people by the next day. Going into the office may never be the same again. Encountering the Meisner technique means having more meaningful encounters.

5. Entertainment
We are never short of laughter, tears, yelling and all around human interactions that are compelling to watch. It's better than going to the movies and more cathartic than yelling at your mother*. You can watch, you can join in, you can do both!

*don't yell at your mother, she is doing her best with what she was given and nobody loves you more than her.

6. Community
Come be part of Toronto's thriving actor community. The Robyn Kay Studio is a dedicated home for actors to work on their skills, build confidence and further their acting careers. It is a place for people to find success everyday by growing as actors and unique individuals while improving audition skills and all aspects of acting. We hope to see you tonight!
