Trying to give the audition room what they want
If they knew what they wanted breakdowns wouldn't be so generic, vague and stereotypical. They have an idea of what they want but you must go in and show them something they never could have thought of until they met you. Your unique deepest truth is something they never could have imagined. So playing an idea of "what they want" is a waste of everybody's time. It is better to make huge, completely wrong choices you commit to, than a safe middle of the road version of what you think makes you look cute. Acting is simply a true expression of human behaviour, of humanity in an imaginary circumstance and for that you must be willing to do what's true over pleasing people. Rather go for being respected as an artist over being liked and the jobs will start coming to you.
Playing the emotion rather than the action
There is nothing worse than watching a performance of someone completely breaking down in a pit of emotion and not feeling anything. The ability to access your emotions is a wonderful skill and incredibly necessary as an actor. However, theres a fine line between expression and indulgence. Indulgence is lame, true expression brings tears to the audiences eyes. How do you know the difference when you feel so much? Great question! You must train to play the action and simply allow the emotions to come up as a by-product of what you are doing. Your action, speaking these words, or giving a speech, or stopping the love of your life from walking out, that is where your focus needs to be. Allowing emotion passively is an art and a skill. But remember that its not about your emotions, its about your actions....thats why you are an actor and not an emoter.

Kudos to, RKS student Jon Cohen, Success!
Its a great day to give Jonathan Cohen a huge shout out for the outstanding work he has been doing in and out of class. He is currently lighting up the stage of the Toronto Centre for the Arts in the Odd Couple with Jaybird Productions!
When Jon first walked into my class over 2 years ago, he had never stepped on a stage and didn't really have a clear idea of what he wanted to do with his life. Now in his third year at RKS he has worked diligently and developed his instrument and completely transformed into a risktaking, deeply emotional actor. He has shined in 6 theatre productions including Mary Poppins, Urinetown and the Music Man to name a few as well as 3 Studio showcases. He has poured his heart into songwriting at times and has impressed us with his strong vulnerability. Every day he battles his fears of being seen and fully expressing his deepest truth and every day he wins. Jon, you are an inspiration to us all and your determination and commitment are highly commendable. It is an honour for me to be on this journey with you to develop all that talent you were blessed with and come into your true identity as an artist. Congratulations on how far you have come, looking forward to your future success, all the while knowing, you have already won:)
You can see Jon in 2 more shows of the Odd Couple Saturday night and Sunday day by following this link CLICK HERE

Huge congrats to RKS student, Bobby Del Rio
I need to take a moment to send a huge congratulations for a job well done to Bobby Del Rio for his success with his original play Professionally Ethnic in last weeks Summerworks festival. Named in 3 Best of the Fest categories in Now magazine (Outstanding Play, Outstanding Production and Outstanding Ensemble) this play was a long time coming and truly demonstrated Bobby's willingness to take risks both as lead actor and playwright. The play tackled incredibly topical and controversial subject matter and did so in a way that was entertaining and thought provoking. Bobby was successful in portraying a complete picture of the complexities of ethnicity in art and his own point of view of the Toronto theatre community clearly and concisely, never wasting a moment of stage time.
This success comes at the tail of his last project, IRL the series, a web series he created and produced that can be viewed online. He also held a starring role in My Roommate's an Escort, the web series and you can see him next in Rouvan Silogix's play Grab'em By The Pussy this fall, which promises to be political as well as hilarious. This has been a banner year so far for Bobby and we wish him continued creation and growth for the rest of 2017.
Bobby has been a student of mine for 2 years and I am constantly impressed by his work ethic, commitment to success and willingness to learn. He is always eager to hear criticism and faces his classwork with no ego. He is the definition of winning attitude as far as my class is concerned and it is evident by his consistent growth as an actor and a human being. He has demonstrated true and unapologetic vulnerability and is always compelling to watch at he pushes himself to get to his deepest truth. Bobby, you are an inspiration to me as it has been an honour to watch you surprise me from class to class with how much you are capable of as an actor and how much of your humanity you are willing to share. You bring a unique energy to the room that could never be replaced or duplicated!!
Congrats on all your success, I look forward to seeing what's next!

Well the time has come to say farewell to the studio that we have made a home in for the past 3 years. This space has witnessed laughter and tears that we have long lost count of. This space has taken hits from actors and been the target of many a thrown chair but has also provided a safe space for actors to dangerously rip down walls and take risks. To fall in love and to say goodbye. This space has changed along with all of us as we have grown up over the last 3 years and we will miss it terribly!! We are excited to announce our new home will be opening in August at 202 Bathurst st, the Origami Theater. Please join us for our final event at the studio and say goodbye to the old as we usher in a new era for the actor community of the Robyn Kay Studio.
For 3 nights only, we bring you our summer showcase where we will give you an experience in theatre you will never forget. Where you will witness truthful raw behaviour and actors working off each other, moment to moment as you watch them doing the Meisner Technique and a selection of scenes and monologues to inspire you and show you that we all have something to fight for. Please join us July 24th, 25th and 26th- Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. If you ever wanted to see what a meisner class is like, here is your chance!! Help us to say goodbye to our studio and enjoy Toronto's best performers in a show that may just change your life.
It is Fringe festival time once again!! My favourite time of year to celebrate independent artistic voices. The Fringe Festival in Toronto is extremely near and dear to my heart because to me Fringe represents opportunity. An opportunity to experience live performance as well as produce pieces that may otherwise not get a voice. So this year I am so proud of my students who are starring in Fringe productions of their own!! So get on out there, support the community, and take advantage of the massive selection of creation taking place. Some will be great, some will be cringe-worthy, all will be live, made from love and only possible by somebody's risk. So cheers to all the creators out there making a splash this week and a very special congratulations to my students taking the plunge!!
Firstly to my students Emily Dickinson and Bobby Del Rio starring with Matthew Krist and Maria Wodzinska in COWBOY MOUTH written by Sam Shephard and Patti Smith.
It’s 1971 at some crazy hotel in some crazy place. Could be some bordertown motel near El Paso, could be the infamous Chelsea Hotel, New York, New York. Slim and Cavale will rip your heart out and take you higher than all revelations with a hot and sizzling surrealist love story.

In WW2, young Carlo Scorsini was a Partisan fighter in Italy. By 1950 he was on his way to Canada determined to start a new life. Years later, his son Elio purchases the family’s abandoned farm only to learn of the tragic events that befell his grandfather and aunt’s family.
