The World Premiere of LUSH

There are so many things you need to be doing on a daily basis for your career actors. It takes a  ton of work to find success in this industry and your job certainly does not end at 5 pm. So when you have gone to class, done your submissions, kept up with your networking, worked out and auditioned, what's left to do?
If the train has yet to pull into your station, maybe its time to get your own car. Create your own vehicle!

You have endless opportunities to broadcast your work. Between Vimeo, YouTube and Vine, you have no excuse for not being seen. Is there a role you have always wanted to play? Write it! Or come up with a concept and find someone to help you! We live in a world where you can literally think up an idea today, post a few ads on craigslist and Mandy.com, find someone to help you write a script (or pick up a copy of screenwriting for Dummies). Then you put another ad on Craigslist looking for crew and cast, or find them all within your acting community and within 3 short weeks you can have your very own premiere screening of your short film. Why wait around for someone else to decide when it is your time? It is your time right now. If you have a pulse and a desire, your dreams can come true. You can give yourself that big break.
I am extremely proud to announce that we will be screening the short film LUSH this coming Sunday evening at 8 pm, following our weekly drop in acting class. A bunch of my students put this film together in a few short weeks utilizing the resources around them. Congratulations to Devon O'Kane for writing, directing and starring along with Artjom Gilz, Meg Oxenholm, Dana Walde and Jess Salgueiro. Come on out to support local Toronto Filmakers, to be inspired, and even to take part in an acting class that will change your life if you allow it.
See you Sunday!

How To Stay Young. Forever.

No matter how old or experienced you are, there are still things you have yet to learn. True? Truer than true- it is actually the purpose of life.
If by chance you are thinking, nah, I know most things by now, think back to 10 years ago and remember what an idiot you were. Do it. Now. How little you knew! Now think ahead to 10 years from now. My hope for you is that in 10 years you look back on this day and say, "woah, I was such an idiot back then, how little I knew!"
The only constant thing in this world is change. The only thing we know for sure is that tomorrow, we will be older, the clouds will move across the sky, the ocean will change the shoreline. We have no idea what will come for sure tomorrow, we just know that it will be different from today. So what you already know will only help you to a certain extent. You must continue to grow and learn and challenge yourself. Congratulations on that corporate job you got right out of university- but what skills have you developed since then? You were great at volleyball in high school- have you played sports since then? You learned how to act, took a reputable theater program, but have you studied new techniques lately? Constant learning is what will keep you young.
That is the beauty and wonder of life.
Every single day, we get to experience a rebirth. We can be children every single day as long as we stop and remind ourselves that we don't know shit. So its okay to feel uncomfortable when learning something new- in fact it is desirable to feel uncomfortable- that is how you know you are growing. Its okay to take the risk and look bad because the truth is that pretending to already know enough makes you look worse. The minute you stop growing is the minute you start dying.

Beginner Meisner Technique class starting next Monday. Is it time to learn a new technique that will really challenge everything you thought you knew? Actors and non actors are welcome.

Well it is happening once again tonight! It's magical, it's fun, it will change your life and the way you approach acting if you allow it to. But what exactly happens at Midnight meisner??

Midnight Meisner is a social experience where you get to participate in a full out meisner class. We open a few bottles of wine, snacks are served and we mingle before starting a class that usually goes through the night.

Picture

It's a great introduction to the technique if you have never seen it and a chance to experience the Robyn Kay studio even if you're an old pro. Also a great opportunity to meet other actors who want to get together with a purpose. Socializing not just for the sake of it, but to enhance your craft- whatever your art form may be. It's $5 and starts at 9 pm at 480 Adelaude West. All are welcome, whether or not you're an actor. We can't wait to meet you.

Its your time- yes, im talking to you!

You know what you want to do. You know what you want to achieve and who you want to be. You have known your whole life. The blueprint to your life is engraved on your soul- it is where your instincts come from. Yet I watch actors every day who second guess their true instincts. Who know very well the habits they have developed to stay safe and feel comfortable. They know how to keep their true feelings to themselves, how to speak quietly so that nobody thinks they are stupid, how to numb so that they don't have to admit the truth. Then those same actors talk about how much they would like to achieve, how they are "trying". They are missing an essential element! They have spent so much time becoming outstanding at hiding who they truly are to keep up with social norms and they have neglected their true instincts. They second guess their true instincts and run with open arms to the safe comfortable choices. They are afraid of their own greatness. And yes, we all have greatness in us. You must trust your instincts, second guessing your greatness will lead you to mediocrity.

To be a great actor you must crave feeling "uncomfortable". That is how you will know you are growing.

You have goals, you have dreams that you have yet to achieve. What is stopping you from getting there? Now is the time. If you have ever said "I just need to save more money" "Im just not ready for the commitment yet" "That class feels too scary for me now" I am talking to you. If you wait until you are ready, you will never accomplish a thing! Your time is now. Waking up in the morning and taking a small action to get you closer to your goal must happen today. Your success will not be a big bang when you are finally ready, your success is the culmination of each small action you take from now until the end of your life. Your success is the failure and loss you will live through on your journey. Your success is the little celebrations and who you help out on a daily basis. You have been working towards something since the day you were born only you didn't know it. You started many years ago. If your actions, however, are not in line with your goals, then you have been working against yourself. Your time is now. If you wake up this morning, then my friend, you are ready.

Meisner classes run continuously at the Robyn Kay Studio. For more info or to come in for an audit call 416-312-9188 or email info@robynkaystudio.com

Go Skinny Dipping and 3 other summer tips

6/2/2014

Despite the fact that the nights are still freezing, we cannot escape the fact that June is upon us and the Summer is about to begin. Almost half the year has passed us by. Are you doing everything you possibly can to make this year count for your life and career? Even though things are slowing down, that is no excuse to slow your efforts. The fall audition season will be here in no time an summer is a wonderful time to plant seeds that will keep you well fed through the autumn and winter. In fact the harder you work over the next 3 months, the more fruitful your winter will be. Here are my 4 top things you must do this summer to ensure that you find yourself warm with success long after the summer is gone.
1. Go Skinny Dipping
Ok, so yes, that was intentionally mean to be provocative. Skinny dipping is glorious fun. (Not that I've done it). I urge you this summer to take some risks. What could you do to surprise yourself this summer? Maybe its dancing in the pouring rain. Maybe its rolling down a grassy hill, singing in public, howling at the moon. Spend time with yourself and figure out what tickles your fancy. Indulge in some impulsive, risky behavior. Remember when you were 12 and every summer was incredibly life-changing- filled with new experiences? There is no reason that should stop! You are an artist, experiencing new things is your job. So stay safe but act on an impulse or 2. Give them something to talk about.

2. Socialize
You have heard it a thousand times, its not what you know but who you know. So who do you know? As many fabulous people as you already do know, there is always room for some more entries in your phone. Meeting new people is good for your soul and for your career. So talk to some people who are more successful than you, cooler than you and in better shape. Remember you become who you spend the most time with. Don't be shy, other people are just as scared of new people as you are. Remember, a stranger is just a friend you haven't met. Thank you, Sesame Street.

3. Put something on YouTube
Anything. As long as its good. Get feedback from someone you trust before you post. Film a monologue, write a short film, a pilot for a web series, a vlog, anything. Be creative and show yourself off. I've been told casting directors in LA and NYC constantly scour the internet looking for new talent and they are always looking for the next big thing. It will also give you something to show people when they ask for a sample of your work. So especially when auditions slow down, you need a way to keep working and keep up your chops. We live in an age where anyone can make a film on a nothing budget. Take advantage of that.

4. Take classes, learn a new technique.
Summer is a perfect time to learn a new technique. If you are looking for a little kick to take your acting to the next level, to become more truthful and really stand out in a crowd, the Meisner technique may be for you. You will gain an intimate knowledge of yourself and instrument and learn to express your unique attributes truthfully. If not, there are many options out there for classes. The point is you should be learning and working- being in class will keep you sharp and get you ready for September.

Beginner classes, Audition technique and teen classes all beginning in June.
